Books and Bagels

Thanks to the awesome parents and grandparents who came to this event. First, we had a Sharing Circle and discussed Second Step. Then, we read books and took A.R. tests. Last, we ate bagels and orange juice. We had great support. It was a blast!

Good-Night Owl!

We have been working on story order and character development as well as story-setting. We read the book Good-Night Owl! Each student was given one of the characters from the story. They studied the pictures and read about their character and recreated that character for our retelling.  Our Principal, Dr. Kessler was our narrator for the retelling. As she read, each child added their character to the tree, which was the setting of the story and made the sound their animal would make. It was great learning and a lot of fun working together to make a show. Thanks Dr. Kessler for your awesome support!

Crocodile Smile - Greater than and Less than!

We learned about greater than and less than by using crocodile puppets. We learned that crocodiles are 'pigs' and only eat the greatest number. It helps the kids a lot to draw sharp teeth in the > and < signs to help them remember which way the greatest number is. Super Fun!

Measuring Up!

One of the second grade standards is using rulers to measure inches and centimeters. First, we measured our ears, noses, heads, hands, feet, fingers. We used yarn to measure ourselves then recorded how long the yarn was in inches and centimeters.
We also used adding machine tape to measure our spine, legs and wingspan. We taped them together to make a skeleton. We used a yard stick to measure how long the tape was. Then we added all of the numbers together with a calculator to find out how long our bones are. It was a blast but our favorite part was making clothes for our skeletons because we decided that 'nobody likes a naked skeleton'.
