Show and Tell Fun

Each week each student gets to share a show-and-tell.  It has to fit into some kind of learning ie: Science, Social Studies, History, Math, Art or Reading. We have had some awesome items that have been shared.  Thank you parents for helping the kids think through the learning!

Nutrition Activity with Dragon

The first story in our reading book is called Dragon Gets By. It is a silly story about crazy nutrition choices a dragon makes when he goes shopping. We learned about proper nutrition. We divided into teams and used grocery ads to cut out and glue the appropriate food to the correct area on the nutrition plate. The kids discovered some amazing things. One child noticed that there are more ads for bad food like fats, oils and sugars than there are for healthy foods.  Another child noticed that healthy food is more expensive than junk food. We also researched and found out that pumpkins and avocados can be considered fruits because they have seeds.

The Reading Train

Each student has a 'learning buddy'.  They got their Reading books and read Dragon Gets By.  What made it so much fun was that they got to sit next to their partner in a line like a train.  When Mrs. Commons' blows the train whistle one of the children starts reading the other partner becomes the listener.  When the whistle blows again the listener gives the reader a 'grow' and a 'glow', then they switch jobs. It is such a great activity for teaching fluency in reading but is especially good at teaching kids to listen carefully.

Dragon Tales

We met out 5th grade Big Buddies from Mrs. Burton's class.  They helped us finish our dragons and then we wrote a story about a dragon.  Our buddies are cool.

Learning Touch Points

We learned about putting touch points on numbers and adding the dots.  It is a fun way to do addition of more than two numbers.

A Brand New Year

I am so excited to meet the 27 new students in my class.  We have 10 boys and 17 girls.  We had a blast going to Math stations.  Each group traveled to 5 different stations.  Great learning, great fun.
