Making Gingerbread Houses

Miss Jensen and Mrs. Commons helped us make gingerbread houses. Mr. Terry made houses out of Styrofoam which made them much easier to decorate. We had tons of choices of candy. We had to promise that we wouldn't eat them until we got home. We had a lot of fun being so creative.

Big Bushy Mustaches

One of the stories in our reading book is called Big Bushy Mustache. It is a fun story. To introduce congruence, we made mustaches. The kids looked adorable!

Count down to 2012

Each child made a chain with 21 links on it. They attached it to a subtraction bell. Each day they took off the links. Weekends were tricky. They wrote subtraction equations on the bell. It was a lot of fun. We will concentrate on subtraction a lot in January.

We learned about citizenship from Ms. Amy

Miss Amy Armstrong taught us about good citizens like Clara Barton, Jackie Robinson, John F. Kennedy, Jr., Rosa Park and Abraham Lincoln. She taught us about the importance of recycling. She helped us make Silhouette Books. She taught us to vote on what type of goodbye party to have. We chose a Sundae Party. Miss Amy is going to be a great teacher.

Crocodile Smiles

Learning greater than and less than was a lot of fun. My husband Terry made really fun crocodile puppets the kids used. We found out the crocodiles are 'pigs' they always eat the greatest number.

Ms. Amy teaching about citizenship!

Our 309 student Ms. Amy taught several amazing lessons about how to be a good citizen. She taught them about Clara Barton, John F. Kennedy Jr., Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks and Abraham Lincoln and how their good citizenship changed history. The kids took a pledge to be a good citizen and they made lists on what they can do personally. She taught them about recycling and how it can help the earth. She let the kids vote on what kind of Citizenship Party they wanted. They voted for an Ice Cream Sundae Party. The kids learned a lot and we all appreciate the work Ms. Amy put into teaching really great lessons.

Learning about animal habitats

We began learning about how and where different kinds of animals live. We started with hippos, which means 'river horse'. We painted their habitats which are rivers with a muddy bottom. Hippos can hold their breath for up to 10 minutes. Ask your child which animal the hippo is most closely related to.

Taking AR tests with the Mobile Laptop Lab

Our 5th grade buddies helped us read an Accelerated Reading book and take the test on it. We used the new Mobile Laptop computers. Our whole class could take tests at the same time. It was awesome!

Columbus Day

In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
With three ships over the sea - ah
The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria!

We made Columbus Day hats.

Making 'My Plate' Nutrition Charts

As part of the Dragon Gets By story in our reading books, we learned about proper nutrition. The myplate.gov website helped us learn about the proper things to eat to stay healthy. The students were divided into groups and used newspaper adds to correctly identify the section each kind of food would go into. We learned that most of our diets should be filled with vegetables and fruits. The next biggest section is grains, then dairy. The smallest section was proteins. There is no longer a sections for fats. By-the-way Dragon chose all of his food from the fats food group. Bad choice! Great story, fun activity!

Grow True, Grow Proud, Grow Strong

As our Back-to-School celebration and to launch our theme for the year, we had a fun assembly. We unveiled a Jefferson tree which will change throughout the year. We watched a slide show of the teachers and staff showing how we have grown since we were children. We explained that all living things need water to grow. The Pocatello Fire Department came and watered the students to help them grow. I predict a super year of growing true, growing proud and growing strong.

A Royal Welcome to Second Grade

The first day of school was great.  We read a awesome book called King Bidgood's in the Bathtub and did a writing activity.  We played Purple Stew which helped us get to know each other.  We did a math activity with patterning.  A highlight of the day was our Royal Tea Party (minus the tea).  Next week we will be reading a book called Dragon Gets By which focuses on nutrition.  Super class!
